Corner To Gulf

Cameron Corner to Karumba
 May-June 2008

We let the Model T Fords get away and then turned our head Westward Ho. It wasn't that far to Camooweal and we arrived around lunch time and pulled up in the park in the main street where a few other vans had congregated. Lunch over, we fuelled up at the servo and gave Bluey & Theresa a call to see how they were progressing in "The Bus". Not far away, was the reply and about 20 minutes later, we got to see them in Camooweal. They were heading through to Daly Waters in the N.T. and were planning on being there for a few weeks or months chasing Barramundi. Our plan was to head towards Lawn Hill via Riversleigh, so before we split up and headed off in different directions, we decided a cooling ale and a catch up was a good plan. Bluey led the way to the waterhole camp which is just on the Western side of town. As you cross the bridge over the river bed, take the first left and follow the dirt track past the yards to the waterhole. This is a huge waterhole and don't be disappointed if you see a few rigs already there and think you might be going to miss out on a spot.....just keep following the waterhole as it does get bigger the further you go. Bluey's bus doesn't have the ground clearance that our Bushtracker does, so we let him find a spot that suited his vehicle and also allowed an easy turn around to be able to get out again.

Plenty of room for all sizes of rigs at Camooweal waterhole

It was great to see them again and after a few drinks the sun was getting low in the sky and this brought even more birds to the waterhole. The Brolgas and Pelicans and Black Swans were already there, but the Lorikeets and Corellas all wanted a drink too.

What a great night it was with good company and a few drinks and lots of laughs and in a magic spot......Ahhhh. The time just got away and Julie who normally leaves the cooking up to me, must have been starving to death as she suddenly appeared with some Mustard Toast and Pasta for 4......what a great finish to a wonderful night.

Sunrise reflecting off your BT......Ahhhhh

Well it was a great night and the sun woke us at the usual time...too early after a big night, but still a beautiful time of day. We had a lethargic start to the morning with a coffee or two and then a hot brekkie and more chatting and about lunch time we decided to go our separate ways. Bluey was looking forward to the Barra fishing at the Daly, but he confided in me that he would rather be heading our way, but the Swagman Australis was really a black top tourer.

Instead of taking the direct road N.E out of Camooweal, we backtracked 80 k's and then turned left (North) as a  bit of local knowledge gave us the tip that the direct road was heavily corrugated and full of large bulldust holes from the frequent road trains that travel the section.
